Wheelchair Users

There are several reasons for why one may be a wheelchair user. In the United Kingdom, 1.28 million people are wheelchair users. Depending on the reasons for being a wheelchair users, there are various techniques and therapies that help individuals. It is important to recognize that it is a broad issue and each individual has a different set of needs.

Most known for his role as Superman, Christopher Reeve was injured from a horse-ridding accident in 1995. This accident caused him to become paralyzed from the neck down. From this accident, he has become an activist in raising awareness and increasing research on spinal cord injuries. Additionally, he founded the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation three years after his injury. Though he experienced difficulties facing the reality of his accident, he made a positive impact on society and showed the importance of funding spinal cord injuries. He touched the lives of many on a global level.

Former United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first US president to have a physical disability. When he was 39 years old, FDR was diagnosed with infantile paralysis. FDR actually designed his own wheelchair for mobility in his household. He tried various methods to show that his disability would not influence his candidacy for presidency and demonstrated strength when speaking at rallies and events with the American people.
